Symbol of Organizational Culture

Human relations plays an imperative role in organizational culture. In order for an organization to thrive productively, effective human relations must prevail. Organizations with poor communication lines are likely to become disenfranchised a lot sooner than their communicating counterparts. I would like to think that Schein agrees with my assumption based on seeing the nature of human relationships listed as one of his underlying dimensions of organizational culture.
Simply put, without effective communication thoroughout an organization, there will be no organization.

I understand your perspective. Social interactions within an organization, especially communication, do shape the culture. I find it interesting though, that the larger your organization, the more variety the types of communication that exist. Nonverbals, verbals, ritualistic behaviors, unspoken cues or rules, and extensive dialogue without meaning are a few. I know that from my experiences, I have seen first hand the dynamic beast that communication can have on the culture a larger organization!

Communication or lack of it. That is the number one issue noted in our employee satisfaction survey. We have poor communciation. I agree with George - how you communicate strongly influences your culture. It's not just how you talk to people, but it's how decisions are made and who has input.

What are some processes that you have in place to ensure two way communication within your organization?

Communication is one of those things that may appear effortless, but really take a lot of thought, sometimes even filtering. Also, what is not said can be as important as what is said. In order to make sure ideas and information are communicated many of us tend to go overboard and communicate the same things in various ways over and over again. While that may communicate the information is that repetition a good use of time and resources? What is the right balance and how do we find it?
